  1. To the attention of the staff of Association Mauritanienne pour la promotion du droit,

The 2020 annual report of the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention highlights the non-implementation of the recommendations made to the Kingdom of Spain in 2019, including:

To immediate release of the Catalan political prisoners jailed in 2017, and sentenced to more than 100 years of prison in 2019
To carry out an independent investigation on the case, and to compensate the Catalan civil and political leaders for the violation of their fundamental rights, including right to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and association
The Working Group issued 85 opinions on the arrest of 171 people in 42 countries, being Spain the only European Union member state included in the report. Additionally, the report states that Spain called for a review of the UN request, alongside countries known for their notorious human rights violations such as Saudi Arabia.

With the publication of this report, the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention once again underscores Spain’s lack of respect for international bodies with regard to the situation in Catalonia, and its double standards in claiming respect for the rule of law while ignoring provisions of international law, judicial independence and criminalization of national minorities and political dissidence, as denounced by international NGOs such as Amnesty international or the World Organization Against Torture.
